Lilith, Adam and Eve

Several myths created during the Middle Ages claim that this goddess was the first woman created by God from the earth. As previously stated, after refusing to be submissive to Adam, Lilith is said to have used God's name in vain and then left the Garden of Eden. After leaving Paradise, God is said to have sent three angels to convince her to return to Eden and become Adam's mate again,From these events, God would have created Eve, so that Adam would not be sad and alone. Eve, in turn, was created from Adam's rib and was totally submissive to her husband.

Some stories that permeate this myth still claim that the serpent who convinced Eve to eat the only forbidden fruit in Paradise was Lilith. The reason for this was jealousy and the desire to destroy Adam and Eve.

Lilith and the Bible

There is nothing about Lilith in the Bible and nothing to suggest that her story is true. In the book of Genesis, the creation narrative speaks only of a woman and a man: Eve and Adam. There is a possible allusion to Lilith in Isaiah 34:14, in which a Hebrew word that has the translation of "night creatures" tends to sound a bit like her. This creature that was mentioned in this bookrepresents a being that would haunt a land called Edom after its destruction. All the creatures present in these passages symbolize the desolation of this land. As the narrative is symbolic, we cannot affirm that this creature really existed or if it is just a metaphor. It is valid to point out that this possible reference to Lilith in the Bible (in the book of Isaiah) was written before the myths about thewoman who would have been created before Adam came into being.

The myth of Lilith adds nothing to the Bible, in fact, it is totally contradictory to it. The Holy Bible is very clear: the serpent who induced Eve to eat the forbidden fruit by deceiving her, was the devil (Revelation 12:9).

Lilith and other cultures

In Babylonian mythology, Lilith was considered a demon who possessed a woman's body and who inhabited Hell. There is a reference in Kabbalah about her, in which she is considered to be Adam's first wife (as mentioned above). In Mesopotamian mythology, Lilith was linked to the figure of a demon of the night who was a woman. In Mesopotamian culture, she represented the wind, and because of thisIn Hebrew mythology, with large quotations in the Talmud and Midrash, Lilith was also related to a demon.

In the mid 3000 B.C., Lilith was called Lilith by the Sumerians. At that time, her figure appeared in the representation of a band of demons or spirits that had a relationship with the winds and storms. Like the Sumerians, Babylonian society also related Lilith to demons and evil spirits. But the people of Babylon used the moon as the symbol of Lilith, believing soLilith was related to demons until the 19th century!

In the contemporary period, another interpretation of the figure of Lilith emerged, which completely abandons the title of a female demon who practices evil and becomes for the romantics a great symbol of seduction and sensuality. This transformation of image occurred among various European intellectuals, who paid homage to Lilith in great works, such as, in 1902, in the painting by John Collier, in whicha creature depicts a sensual woman surrounded by a serpent. From then on, she was no longer associated with evil things.

Some ancient people used to say that the screams of an owl meant that Lilith was near. In fact, one of the names given to her was "Cry of the Owl", because she was a symbol of clamor and of women's desire for equality. Among Catholic people, the image of Liliith became popular after the rise of demonology studies in the 14th century. The representation of some studies relate her toIt is exactly at this point that the myths of the "witch" and "mother of vampires" were born.

From demon, to goddess

Many consider Lilith to be one of the most "sinister" female entities. She was once thought to be a demon responsible for abortions and carelessness during pregnancy, which is why many consider her to be an enlightenment for the premature death of babies, but know that her representation as a female demon goes much deeper.

As time went by, from being a demon Lilith was transformed into a goddess! She became identified as a great power of female independence, leaving behind all the demonization of her image.

In the last century, several stories emerged that romanticized and illustrated Lilith's struggle against the predominant power of man (more precisely against the submission imposed by Adam and God), as a way to empower the figure of woman in Judeo-Christian mythology. And it is in this period that the nomination "goddess" arrived!

In 1960, with the great influence of several feminist movements, many women in Jewish society began to raise questions about Lilith. From this revisionism, she began to be seen as a female symbol of struggle against all machismo and patriarchy and, consequently, her image of revolt against this social order of men was established. With this, the neo-pagans assimilatedthis version and began to worship Lilith as a goddess.
