 Meaning of dreams for spirituality

Tom Cross

Human beings dream every night, even if they don't remember or think they don't dream. Some dream more, others less. In fact, research shows that all mammals have dreams.

The fact is that dreams have always fascinated mankind. In ancient times, they were considered omen-like, while for psychoanalysis, they have a connection with the unconscious, with our emotions.

For neurophysiology, dreaming has several important functions for the organism, for example, the consolidation of memory.

Dreams are still a mystery to many people, particularly because they are loaded with symbolism and mysticism.

In the spiritual vision, dreams carry messages from our higher guides. And it is about the meaning of dreams for spirituality that we will talk in this article.

What is the dream?

Scientifically speaking, dreaming is a brain activity in which there is a series of events that take place especially during the phase called REM (rapid eye movement), the last stage of the sleep cycle. In this stage, dreams are more vivid and frequent.

For Freud, dreams are messages from our unconscious about our repressed desires, while for Jung, they are an attempt by consciousness itself to adjust and compensate for situations we experience.

Dreams, in the spiritual vision

From a spiritual point of view, dreaming is reliving a memory of the soul. Each dream theme has one or more meanings, a message (or several), and is also related to our individual experience, since it reflects our psychological and spiritual condition at that moment.

When the spirit returns to the body, the memories of what it has experienced become clear, hence it is said that spiritual dreams are more vivid and vivid, because they portray a real experience, in which we meet other beings and learn. But this does not mean that we will remember perfectly what we dreamed.

For Spiritism, dreams are the result of a phenomenon called emancipation of the soul, when the spirit partially detaches from the physical body (it is only connected by a fluidic cord), gaining freedom and autonomy and witnessing (or actively experiencing) events in both dimensions. This is what we call spiritual unfolding or astral projection.

As mentioned above, in the spiritualist vision, dreams are the result of experiences lived in the spiritual realm, and may be connected, or not, to the physical world or to psychological aspects of our experience. Therefore, we are not always able to understand or interpret them in a rational way.

Mediumship and dreams

We can, for example, dream of people who have already passed away, which can mean our desire to maintain a link with them, even after they have passed away. Or even a teaching, or help from their spirit.

And those who have heightened mediumnity can more easily remember the experiences they had during this spiritual unfolding. There are some aspects that denote greater development of mediumistic abilities:

  • Excessive and uncontrollable sleep, due to exhaustion from activities during the astral projection.
  • Recurring nightmares, either from bad experiences during the astral journey, or from the memory of bad events from past lives.
  • Perception of the presence of spirits during sleep.
  • A habit of talking in your sleep, which may be the way your body expresses itself in relation to what you are experiencing spiritually.

Types of dreams for spirituality

There are some types of dreams that are most common in spiritual manifestations. We will highlight the main ones:

  • Premonitory or precognitive dreams They are quite common, but more intuitive people have them much more frequently. In the spiritual vision, they can be a sign from our ascended guides, and they do not always lead to a real event, but only sharpen our mystical perception.
  • Recurring dreams They may be peaceful dreams, but they are almost always nightmares. Often they happen to alert us to situations that deserve our immediate attention and need to be resolved as soon as possible.
  • Healing or prodromal dreams They are very common when the mind wants to tell us that something is not right with our body, serving as a warning regarding our health. They can also help us to avoid or cure health problems.
  • Nightmares From the spiritual point of view, it is related to our energetic frequency, and even to obsessive spirits. If they are constant, it may be that ourspirit is wandering in dark places on the spiritual plane.
  • Epic or cosmic dreams These are remarkable dreams, whose details remain vivid in our memory through time, as if we had dreamed them the night before. They are events that impress and astonish us, provoking a sensation of expansion of consciousness.
  • Progressive dreams They are a way for our spirit to try to call us to solve problems, by offering various viewpoints.
  • Mutual Dreams They can be related to past life experiences, or even be an astral encounter, even though the two people are not in the dream.

Meaning of Dreams for the Bible

According to biblical accounts, dreams are a way for God to speak to his children on earth. We can see in the Bible that God not only led people to dream, but also granted some the ability to interpret dreams.

There are several passages dealing with these events, in which God uses dreams for three distinct purposes:

  • Prophetic or revelatory dreams Several episodes in the Bible speak of prophecies that God has poured out to his chosen ones through dreams.
  • Alerting Dreams : his job was to bring warnings and give directions.
  • Encouraging dreams They had the function of encouraging people or groups.

As you can see, dreams have fascinated us since the world was made, and there is still much to explore about them. Whether from a scientific or occult point of view, dreams are fundamental events for the functioning of our body, mind, and spirit.
