Triskle: meaning and use of this spiritual symbol

Tom Cross

The ancient society of the Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, believed that the number 3 was the most powerful number of all, so they developed a series of symbols related to triads and other triple concepts. And the triskle is one of them! Are you ready to understand what this symbol means?

Check out in this article what a triskle is, what its origin is, what it means, its symbolism, and how to use this symbol!

What is the triskle

In short, the triskle is a symbol originating from the Celtic culture, a people who lived mainly in the territory now occupied by Ireland. The triskle is a junction of three circles that start from the same central point; these circles have their tips curved, in a movement resembling the design of a wave.

The triskle should not be confused with other Celtic symbols that have the idea of a trinity or three points, such as the triquestra, or the Greek symbol triscele. Anyway, the triskle is a wisdom symbol that has an important meaning linked to femininity, and you can check it out in the following topics.

Origin of the triskle

The origin of the triskle goes back to the ancient Celtic civilization, which resided in various parts of Europe, but mainly in the territory where Ireland now stands. The triskle has been found by archaeologists on artifacts built and used during the Neolithic era, which began in 7000 B.C. This is why it is considered an ancient symbol.

The most curious thing is that the Greeks also had a symbol very similar to the triskle, known as triscele (or triskelion), although there is no record that the two civilizations interacted with each other in the Neolithic period. Some call it a coincidence, others see it as an indication of a spiritual connection.

What triskle means

"Triskle" comes from the Greek word "triskelion", which literally means "three legs". Because they are quite similar, both the Greek and the Celtic symbol have received quite similar nomenclatures.

The meaning of the triskle is powerful, assuming that the number 3 was the most sacred number to the Celts. Birth, life and death; body, mind and spirit; spring, summer and winter (they believe in only 3 seasons), among other concepts, show that they believed in triads.

Symbolism of the triskle

The symbolism of the triskle begins in the choice of the movement of the lines of this symbol, which follow a fluidity, a harmonious and continuous movement. This, in itself, already represents the need for balance within us, as well as the idea that everything, however different it may be and however many different directions it may follow, starts from the same initial point.

Another detail that escapes the eyes of many is that the movement of the Celtic spirals does not follow clockwise, but counterclockwise. This shows that the symbolism of the triskle was quite spiritual, because the reverse movement concerns the manipulation of what is natural, therefore, magic and other concepts.

Other symbologies of the triskle are the concepts of always being in action, in movement, in progress, and in evolution, which are evidenced in the traces of the tips, which are fluid and harmonious.

Anyway, as explained in the first topic, there is also a relationship with the concept of the three pillars of Celtic culture, such as spring, summer and winter; past, present and future; birth, life and death, and so on.

How to use the triskle

Like other symbols of protection and that promise to influence us positively, you can choose how you adhere to them. Some people prefer to tattoo these symbols to always receive their protection or influence. Others prefer to wear necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and other accessories.
