Appearances of Archangel Raphael in the Bible

In the Holy Bible, the Archangel Raphael is mentioned only in the books of the Old Testament. He appears, more precisely, in the book of Tobias, one of the oldest of the set of biblical texts. The first appearance of the angel is in Tobias: chapter 5, verse 4, in which he appears to the young Tobias. Raphael appeared to Tobias as a normal person, even hiding his angelic nature.

Then, in the sixth chapter, verse 3, the angel approaches Tobias, who, in a state of blindness, sees himself being devoured by a great fish (or whale). He commands the Jew that he must subdue the beast and remove the gall from the animal. It is with this material that the angel heals Tobias, who sees again. From then on, Raphael becomes known as the holder of the gifts of healing.

He returns in chapter 12, revealing to the newly healed man that he is an angel sent by God. He says, "I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who attend and have access to the majesty of the Lord" (Tobias, chapter 12, verse 15).
